Walmart Cashier’s Disgusting Behaviour Gets Her Fired, Then Arrested Toyota’s Hypercar Offensive: A Deep Dive into the GR GT, GT3, and Future Lexus LFA Toyota’s automotive future isn’t just about sustainable commuting; it’s about proving their engineering prowess on the global stage. The unveiling of the Toyota GR GT, the GR GT3 race car, and the new Lexus LFA concept has sent shockwaves through the performance car world. These aren’t just concept pieces; they are blueprints for Toyota’s next generation of halo vehicles, each representing a distinct technological philosophy. While Toyota remains tight-lipped about exact specifications and pricing, the engineering team provided enough insights to paint a vivid picture of what to expect. Chief Program Manager Takashi Doi and the lead engineers from chassis, powertrain, design, and aerodynamics shared their vision, even if some answers were couched in polite deflections. This, however, only amplifies the excitement surrounding these projects. The biggest takeaway is that Toyota plans to milk every milestone on the journey from concept to production, ensuring maximum impact for each vehicle as it transitions from the showroom to the racetrack. The Toyota GR GT: A Modern-Day GT That Matters The Toyota GR GT is poised to be the production road car that homologates the GR GT3 race car, slated for a 2027 release and likely hitting showrooms as a 2028 model. While the race car may debut sooner—following a precedent set by the Ford GT—the road car serves as the benchmark for performance, luxury, and technological integration. Pricing and Availability: Setting the Benchmark When pressed about the pricing of the GR GT, Program Manager Doi pointed to comparable models in the Porsche 911 GT3 and Mercedes-AMG AMG GT lineups. Using the GR GT’s claimed 641 horsepower and 3,858-pound curb weight as a guide, the power-to-weight ratio comes in at 6.0 lb/hp. To understand where the GR GT might fit in the market, consider these benchmark models: | Vehicle | Curb Weight | Horsepower | Weight/Power | Base Price | | :— | :— | :— | :— | :— | | 2028 Toyota GR GT | 3858 lb | 641 hp | 6.0 lb/hp | N/A | | 2026 Porsche 911 GT3 | 3278 lb | 502 hp | 6.2 lb/hp | $235,500 | | 2026 Porsche 911 Turbo S | 3859 lb | 701 hp | 5.5 lb/hp | $275,650 | | 2026 AMG GT Pro 4Matic | 4299 lb | 603 hp | 7.1 lb/hp | $202,200 | | 2026 Aston Martin Vantage S | 3847 lb | 671 hp | 5.7 lb/hp | $235,000 |
Note: Weights and horsepower are approximate. Based on this competitive set, it is highly probable that the GR GT will be priced well above the $200,000 mark. This positions it as a legitimate contender in the upper echelon of luxury sports coupes, challenging established German marques. Powertrain and Performance: Engagement and Technology The GR GT features a fiendishly complex hybrid powertrain centered around a mechanical limited-slip differential (LSD). This configuration is designed to facilitate not only extreme driver engagement but also exhilarating driving dynamics. Think thick black burnouts, smoky donuts, and eye-wateringly long drifts. To answer the question on everyone’s mind: will it drift? And specifically, will there be a drift mode? Doi-san confirmed that his team is developing multiple driving modes, but would not specify their names. A glance at the GR GT’s steering wheel offers some clues, particularly a knob on the right labeled ‘Sport Boost.’ This suggests a performance-focused throttle mapping designed for spirited driving. Mirroring this on the lower left side is a traction and stability control button, labeled ‘TRC/VSC’ with the word “Off.” When asked if drivers would be allowed to disable traction and stability control completely, Doi eventually confirmed that the system could be turned off. This commitment to driver control is crucial for a sports car aimed at enthusiasts who value pure performance and precision handling. Future-Proofing the Performance Pedigree Looking ahead, we inquired about potential future higher-performance variants of the GR GT. Would we see a Nürburgring Edition, following the path of the Lexus LFA? Or perhaps a GRMN (Meister of Nürburgring), GT-R, or GT3 RS version? Doi replied, “Obviously we can’t talk about future product, but variations and improvements is something we’re always looking for. And that’s crucial, very important for a sports car.” This response signals that the GR GT platform is designed for scalability. While specific iterations remain speculative, Toyota’s commitment to continuous improvement ensures that the platform can support future upgrades, special editions, and high-performance derivatives tailored for different markets and motorsport applications. The Nürburgring Obsession: From Humiliation to Redemption The Master Driver’s Vision When Akio “Master Driver Morizo” Toyoda, the grandson of the founder and the driving force behind Gazoo Racing, introduced the GR GT and GR GT3 at the Woven City launch event, he stood in front of a massive video screen displaying the word “HUMILIATION.” His message was clear: the GR lineup is born from a desire to rectify past shortcomings in Toyota’s performance vehicles.
Toyoda spoke extensively about the experience of development laps at the Nürburgring Nordschleife just a few years ago. He recounted being passed by faster, better-handling sports cars—many from Germany—in what was supposed to be Toyota’s best offerings at the time. This experience, steeped in the Japanese concept of “humiliation as a force for improvement,” has driven the development of the GR GT and GT3. Target Lap Times and Competitive Ambitions When asked about the importance of the Nürburgring and whether the team is targeting a specific lap time, such as under seven minutes—a barrier recently breached by the Mustang GTD (6:52), Corvette ZR1 (6:50), and Corvette ZR1X (6:49)—Doi-san declined to confirm. However, he did affirm the critical importance of the Nürburgring to Toyota, the GR brand, and the company’s motorsports programs. He reiterated Akio Toyoda’s position that the GR GT would not be the one getting passed on the Green Hell. Given the modesty and humility characteristic of Japanese automotive engineers, this is essentially a declaration that the GR GT will achieve a sub-seven-minute lap time. This is particularly likely considering that various 911 GT3 and AMG GT models have all dipped well below this barrier, firmly establishing a new benchmark for high-performance GT cars. The Lexus LFA Concept: A Digital Dream Reimagined Pricing and Availability: The Long Wait Continues For those captivated by the Lexus LFA and eager to know when it will arrive and how much it will cost, the news is sobering. “Several years” was the refrain from Toyota representatives, including Doi-san. As for the price, we anticipate the new LFA will need to be considerably less than its predecessor, which debuted in 2010 at a shocking $375,000 and exited the market a couple of years later at $445,000 for the LFA Nürburgring Edition. Doi-san conceded that the world has changed significantly since the first-generation LFA departed. The transition to an electric powertrain complicates the equation. This appears to be a subtle implication that the next-generation LFA needs to be priced under $350,000. We believe it must be substantially less than that for a couple of reasons. The market for luxury sports coupes is already minuscule, and there are currently no electric sports coupes in the $200,000+ range. A few electric luxury and performance cars currently exceed $200,000, including the Lucid Air Sapphire, Rolls-Royce Spectre, and Cadillac Celestiq, but none fit the competitive profile of the LFA. Entering the electric hypercar realm of the Rimac Nevera and Lotus Evija pushes the price into the $2.3 to $2.4 million range, which is decidedly not Lexus territory. About the only vehicle that comes close to the mission Lexus is attempting is the second-generation Tesla Roadster, which is rumored to be in the $200,000 to $250,000 range—if Elon’s vaporware ever materializes. The Solid-State Battery Gambit One complicating factor could render the LFA a very pricey and exotic luxury sports flagship for Lexus: the use of solid-state battery (SSB) technology. While no one at the event would confirm this under direct questioning, it is a strong possibility.
What we do know is that Toyota has been working on solid-state batteries since 2020, following a joint venture with Panasonic named Prime Planet Energy & Solutions, Inc. In 2024, Toyota released an update on its battery plans, indicating that SSB technology would arrive around
