Wannabe Gangster Turns Into a Baby When Police Show Up Toyota’s Ultimate Performance Offensive: A Deep Dive into the Future of GR, Lexus, and Motorsports Toyota’s grand unveiling of its trio of high-performance vehicles—the Lexus LFA Concept, the road-going Toyota GR GT, and the GR GT3 race car—sent shockwaves through the automotive world. More than just a collection of new metal, this event marked a profound declaration by Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda, who is better known as “Master Driver Morizo.” It signaled not only the return of the legendary LFA nameplate but also a bold, multi-faceted push to reinforce Toyota’s manufacturing prowess and pass its foundational car-making skills to the next generation of engineers. This initiative is steeped in a deep-rooted Japanese cultural concept known as Shikinen Sengu. Traditionally, this refers to the periodic rebuilding of Shinto shrines, where essential structures and ceremonial garments are recreated. The ritual ensures that the skills of artisans—from architecture to blacksmithing—are continually passed down. In the context of Toyota, Shikinen Sengu represents the preservation and transfer of core automaking expertise, infused with the cutting-edge technologies shaping the future of the industry. By launching an entirely new high-performance brand in GR (Gazoo Racing) and tasking its engineers to develop two flagship sports cars and a formidable race car, each with a unique powertrain, Toyota is not merely spending hundreds of millions of dollars. It is offering its emerging talent the highest-profile platform to build world-class vehicles and compete at the most elite levels of motorsport. This strategic move positions Toyota at the forefront of innovation, ensuring its legacy extends far beyond the mass-market vehicles that have dominated the automotive landscape for decades. The 2028 Toyota GR GT: Engineering Elegance and Electrified Fury The star of the show for everyday enthusiasts is the 2028 Toyota GR GT, which is expected to arrive as a 2028 model, serving as the homologation foundation for its race-ready counterpart. Toyota representatives were tight-lipped about exact specifications, but based on the vehicles displayed and the technical briefings we attended, several key characteristics are clear. Pricing and Availability: A Premium Prospect When pressed about pricing, Chief Program Manager Takashi Doi pointed to comparable high-performance coupes in the market, such as the Porsche 911 GT3 and Mercedes-AMG GT Pro, as benchmarks. Using the GR GT’s claimed output of 641 horsepower and a curb weight of 3,858 pounds, the resulting weight-to-power ratio is 6.0 pounds per horsepower. When compared to rivals, the GR GT’s positioning becomes evident. While the Porsche 911 GT3 starts around $235,500 with 502 horsepower (6.2 lbs/hp) and the AMG GT Pro Pro is priced near $202,200 with 603 horsepower (7.1 lbs/hp), the GR GT is expected to command a premium. Given its high-tech powertrain and exclusive nature, the GR GT will likely debut at a price point exceeding $200,000. The Fiendish Hybrid Powertrain: Precision and Performance At the heart of the GR GT lies a stunning example of engineering complexity. Starting with a naturally aspirated, 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine featuring forged internals—including pistons, connecting rods, and a cross-plane crankshaft—the powertrain delivers a claimed 641 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque.
This raw power is channeled through an enclosed driveshaft housed in a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) torque tube to a sophisticated transaxle at the rear. This unit houses the electric motor and an eight-speed transmission, creating a unique 180-degree rotation. This layout is an engineering masterstroke, shortening the overall length of the powertrain while enabling Toyota to showcase its manufacturing capabilities. Performance Modes and Handling Dynamics Takashi Doi confirmed that the engineering team is developing multiple driving modes to suit different conditions. Clues from the steering wheel include a ‘Sport Boost’ button on the right and a traction/stability control (TRC/VSC) button on the left. While the exact names of these modes remain secret, the ability to completely disable traction and stability control was confirmed, signaling a focus on engaging, driver-focused performance. When asked about future variants of the GR GT, such as a Nürburgring Edition or GRMN, Doi-san remained coy but acknowledged the importance of exploring variations and improvements for the sports car. This suggests that Toyota’s vision extends beyond the initial model, with the potential for higher-performance versions in the future. The Nürburgring Ambition: A Journey from Humiliation to Redemption Akio Toyoda’s presentation highlighted the Nürburgring Nordschleife as a pivotal motivator for the GR GT and GR GT3. He spoke at length about the “humiliation” of seeing faster, better-handling sports cars — particularly from German manufacturers — easily overtaking Toyota’s vehicles on the Green Hell just a few years ago. This concept of using humiliation as a catalyst for improvement drove the development of the GR GT and GT3. When asked if the team is targeting a specific lap time—such as under seven minutes, as recently achieved by the Corvette ZR1 and Mustang GTD—Doi-san declined to confirm a specific target. However, he reaffirmed the Nürburgring’s crucial importance to Toyota, the GR brand, and the company’s motorsports programs, stating unequivocally that the GR GT will no longer be the one getting passed on the Green Hell. Given the modesty of Japanese engineering culture and the pedigree of the GR brand, this statement essentially declares that the GR GT will achieve a sub-seven-minute lap time. With various Porsche 911 GT3 and AMG GT models already surpassing this benchmark, Toyota’s ambition is clearly aligned with the most elite vehicles in the segment. The 2028 Lexus LFA Concept: A New Vision for the Supercar Perhaps the most anticipated announcement was the return of the Lexus LFA. This concept is poised to redefine the electric supercar landscape, blending next-generation technology with the legacy of its V10 predecessor. Pricing and Availability: A Long-Term Vision
Details regarding the LFA’s release are even more scarce than the GR GT. Toyota representatives indicated a timeline of “several years,” suggesting a debut sometime after the GR GT in 2028. As for pricing, a major factor has changed since the original LFA, which debuted in 2010 at $375,000 and reached $445,000 for the Nürburgring Edition. Takashi Doi acknowledged that the world has changed and that returning as an electric vehicle (EV) complicates the equation. This implies a price point below the original LFA’s figures. However, the luxury sports coupe market is notoriously niche, and with no electric sports coupes currently positioned above $200,000 (excluding niche hypercars like the Rimac Nevera), Toyota faces a unique challenge. While there are some electric luxury cars above $200,000, such as the Lucid Air Sapphire and Cadillac Celestiq, these models do not fit the LFA’s performance profile. The current best benchmark is the rumored second-generation Tesla Roadster, projected to be in the $200,000 to $250,000 range, assuming it materializes. However, Toyota’s target may be considerably higher, depending on the technologies utilized. Solid-State Batteries: The Potential Game-Changer One factor that could significantly influence the LFA’s pricing is the potential adoption of solid-state battery (SSB) technology. While no one at the event would confirm this under direct questioning, the timing aligns perfectly with Toyota’s roadmap. Toyota has been investing heavily in solid-state batteries since 2020, through its joint venture with Panasonic, Prime Planet Energy & Solutions, Inc. In 2024, Toyota announced plans to introduce SSB technology between 2027 and 2028, promising a range of 621 miles (1,000 km) and charging times of approximately 10 minutes. This technological leap would not only represent a massive performance advancement but also offer a potential solution to packaging challenges in an electric LFA. Packaging Challenges and Innovative Solutions The current industry standard for EV battery placement is a low-mounted, skateboard-style chassis, which keeps the center of gravity low. However, the LFA Concept utilizes an all-aluminum spaceframe chassis shared with the GR GT and GR GT3, which lacks a traditional floorpan. Traditional lithium-ion cells, pouches, or packs would need to be integrated ahead of the firewall or under the cabin, which is structurally complex. Alternatively, the batteries could occupy the engine bay, transmission tunnel, and cargo area after the hybrid V8 powertrain is removed. However, using smaller, lighter, and more energy-dense SSB technology could provide the ideal solution. For Lexus, the strategic advantage of debuting game-changing solid-state batteries in its flagship sports car—a halo vehicle that reinforces the brand’s prestige—is immense. This could be the reason for the LFA’s distant production timeline, and it suggests that when the LFA finally arrives, it will be a technological tour de force. Bigger Picture: Tech Transfer and Motorsports as the Future
The launch of the GR GT, GR GT3, and Lexus LFA Concept is far more than a simple product rollout. It represents a comprehensive strategy
