Selfish Brat Nearly Kills Her Friends in Police Chase Gone Wrong Toyota’s Sporting Renaissance: Unpacking the GR Trinity and the Future of Performance In a move that reverberated across the automotive world, Toyota unveiled a trio of performance-oriented vehicles that signal a bold new direction for the Japanese giant. This grand reveal featured the conceptual Lexus LFA, the road-legal Toyota GR GT, and the track-ready GR GT3 race car. These aren’t just standalone models; they are cornerstones of an ambitious strategy to preserve manufacturing prowess while embracing cutting-edge technology. We had the opportunity to engage with Chief Program Manager Takashi Doi and the engineering teams behind these machines. While answers were often carefully managed, the underlying message was clear: Toyota is committing to a long-term journey for these vehicles, ensuring they are more than just concept cars but legitimate players in the global performance arena. The GR GT: A Homologated Beast for the Road Central to Toyota’s sports car revitalization is the GR GT, a road-legal variant set to hit the market likely as a 2028 model. This car serves as the production-ready, homologated version of the GR GT3 race car. The strategy mirrors past trends, where race cars often debut well before their road-legal counterparts, but Toyota’s timeline suggests a relatively quick transition from track testing to dealership floors. Pricing and Positioning When questions turned to the price of the GR GT, Project Manager Doi invited us to consider the premium landscape of Porsche 911 GT3 and Mercedes-AMG GT models with similar performance specifications. Evaluating the GR GT’s claimed 641 horsepower and 3,858-pound curb weight reveals a power-to-weight ratio of 6.0 lbs/hp, placing it squarely in the performance envelope of these established rivals. Here is a breakdown of comparable high-performance GTs to provide context for the GR GT’s positioning: | Vehicle | Curb Weight | Horsepower | Weight/Power Ratio | Base Price | | :— | :— | :— | :— | :— | | 2028 Toyota GR GT | 3,858 lbs | 641 hp | 6.0 lbs/hp | N/A | | 2026 Porsche 911 GT3 | 3,278 lbs | 502 hp | 6.2 lbs/hp | $235,500 | | 2026 Porsche 911 Turbo S | 3,859 lbs | 701 hp | 5.5 lbs/hp | $275,650 | | 2026 AMG GT Pro 4Matic | 4,299 lbs | 603 hp | 7.1 lbs/hp | $202,200 | | 2026 Aston Martin Vantage S | 3,847 lbs | 671 hp | 5.7 lbs/hp | $235,000 |
Note: Prices are indicative for comparative purposes. Given this competitive set, it’s highly probable that the Toyota GR GT will command a starting price of over $200,000. This positions it as a direct contender to luxury performance benchmarks from Germany and Britain. Powertrain and Driver Engagement The GR GT features a complex and exhilarating hybrid powertrain designed to deliver maximum driver engagement. At its core is a mechanical limited-slip differential (LSD), a crucial element for enthusiasts seeking pure driving dynamics. With over 600 horsepower, the GR GT promises ample tire-smoking capabilities, including significant burnouts, drifts, and overall high-performance handling. Responding to whether the car will support drifts, Project Manager Doi confirmed that the engineering team is developing multiple driving modes. While the specific names of these modes were not disclosed, the GR GT’s steering wheel provides significant clues. A rotary dial on the right side features the label ‘Sport Boost,’ suggesting a mode dedicated to maximizing power and performance. Mirroring this on the lower left is a button for traction and stability control (TRC/VSC), with an “Off” option. When directly questioned about the ability to completely disable these safety systems, Doi eventually affirmed that yes, drivers would have full control. Looking ahead, the engineering team acknowledged the potential for future variations of the GR GT. WhileToyota remains tight-lipped about specific future models—such as a potential Nürburgring Edition (following the Lexus LFA’s production strategy), a GRMN (Meister of Nürburgring) version, or a GT R/GT3 RS variant—Doi stated, “Obviously we can’t talk about future product, but variations and improvements is something we’re always looking for. And that’s crucial, very important for a sports car.” Nürburgring: From Humiliation to Global Domination The theme of the Nürburgring Nordschleife was a central topic during the unveiling, particularly regarding Toyota Gazoo Racing’s motivation. Akio “Master Driver Morizo” Toyoda, the driving force behind Gazoo Racing and grandson of the Toyota founder, emphasized the concept of Shikinen Sengu—a traditional Japanese ritual of rebuilding shrines every few decades to preserve skills and traditions. In the context of the GR GT and GR GT3, this Japanese concept of using humiliation as a catalyst for improvement served as the primary driver for these projects. Akio Toyoda spoke candidly about the experience of developing Toyota sports cars—including a fourth-generation Supra—on the Nürburgring and being overtaken by faster, superior-handling cars, predominantly from German brands. When asked about the importance of the Nürburgring and whether the team is targeting a sub-7-minute lap time, as recently achieved by rivals like the Mustang GTD, Corvette ZR1, and Corvette ZR1X, Doi chose not to commit to a specific figure. However, he strongly affirmed the critical role of the Nürburgring to Toyota, the GR brand, and the company’s motorsports programs. His statement was clear: the GR GT will not be the car getting passed on the Green Hell. Given the typical modesty of Japanese automotive engineers, this statement can be interpreted as a de facto declaration that the GR GT will achieve a sub-7-minute lap, especially considering that numerous 911 GT3 and AMG GT models have already broken this benchmark.
The Lexus LFA: The Next-Generation EV Flagship For enthusiasts of the original Lexus LFA, the question of when and for how much the new model will arrive is paramount. The official response from Toyota representatives, including Doi-san, was “several years.” When pressed about pricing, it’s clear that the new LFA must be significantly more affordable than its predecessor. The original LFA debuted in 2010 at a staggering $375,000 and concluded production with the LFA Nürburgring Edition at $445,000. Doi-san acknowledged that the automotive landscape has changed since the Lexus V10 supercar departed the market. Returning as an electric vehicle (EV) presents unique challenges. This appears to be a subtle indication that the next-generation LFA must retail at a lower price point, likely under $350,000. We believe the LFA will need to come in considerably lower for a few key reasons. Firstly, the market for luxury sports coupes is already extremely niche. Secondly, there are currently no electric sports coupes priced above $200,000. There are a small number of electric luxury and performance vehicles that exceed $200,000, such as the Lucid Air Sapphire, Rolls-Royce Spectre, and Cadillac Celestiq. However, none of these fit the competitive profile of the LFA. Entering the realm of electric hypercars, such as the Rimac Nevera and Lotus Evija, involves prices between $2.3 to $2.4 million, which is decidedly not Lexus territory. The closest competitor in concept is the rumored second-generation Tesla Roadster, which is speculated to be priced between $200,000 to $250,000—assuming, of course, that Elon Musk’s long-promised vaporware ever materializes. The Potential of Solid-State Battery Technology One complicating factor could elevate the LFA to a truly exclusive and exotic Lexus flagship: the potential integration of solid-state battery (SSB) technology. While no one at the event confirmed this under direct questioning, there are strong indicators that this is Toyota’s direction. Toyota has been developing solid-state batteries since 2020, following the establishment of its joint venture with Panasonic, Prime Planet Energy & Solutions, Inc. In 2024, Toyota released an update on its battery roadmap, projecting SSB deployment in 2027 to 2028, offering a range of 621 miles (1,000 km) and charging times of approximately 10 minutes. This level of battery performance would represent a massive technological leap, which is precisely the kind of innovation Lexus likely seeks for its flagship sports car. Furthermore, solid-state batteries could solve a significant packaging challenge for the electric LFA.
The standard practice in global EV manufacturing is to position heavy battery cells, usually in packs, as low as possible in the vehicle’s chassis to maintain a low center of gravity and enhance handling. This “skateboard” chassis layout was popularized by the first successful mainstream EV, the Tesla Model S, and has been adopted by virtually
