Entitled Customer Goes Ballistic & Assaults Walgreen Staff With Candy Bars Toyota’s Sports Car Comeback: Inside the GR GT, GT3, and Lexus LFA Push for Glory An Insider Look at Toyota’s Bold Leap Back into High-Performance Motoring Toyota just pulled the wraps off a trio of groundbreaking sports cars designed to redefine their legacy and challenge the giants of the automotive world. The Lexus LFA Concept, the road-legal GR GT, and the track-focused GR GT3 race car represent a seismic shift for the company, a strategic declaration that Toyota is back in the game with a vengeance. But what drives this bold move? And what does it mean for the future of performance driving? After hours with the engineering teams, a close inspection of the vehicles, and a dose of corporate subtlety, we’ve pieced together the full story of Toyota’s ambitious “Holy Trinity.” From the powertrain intricacies to the philosophical underpinning of “Shikinen Sengu,” this is a comprehensive look at what Toyota is cooking up in the world of high-performance automobiles. GR GT: The Road-Legal Homologation Special The most immediate arrival on the horizon is the Toyota GR GT, slated to hit the streets around 2027 as a 2028 model. This is more than just a halo car; it’s the homologation version of the GR GT3 race car, meaning it must meet the specific regulations for professional competition. While the race car will likely debut first, as seen with the Ford GT in the past, the road-legal version will serve as the ultimate expression of Toyota’s engineering prowess. Pricing and Market Positioning Predicting the price of the GR GT has been a hot topic, and Toyota executives have offered some telling hints. When pressed on pricing, chief program manager Takashi Doi pointed to the competitive landscape of the Porsche 911 GT3 and Mercedes-AMG AMG GT models with similar performance specifications. Using the GR GT’s claimed 641 horsepower and 3858-pound curb weight, we arrive at a weight-to-power ratio of 6.0 lb/hp. This places it firmly in the league of elite rivals: | Vehicle | Curb Weight | Horsepower | Weight/Power Ratio | Estimated Base Price | | :— | :— | :— | :— | :— | | 2028 Toyota GR GT | 3858 lb | 641 hp | 6.0 lb/hp | N/A | | 2026 Porsche 911 GT3 | 3278 lb | 502 hp | 6.2 lb/hp | $235,500 | | 2026 Porsche 911 Turbo S | 3859 lb | 701 hp | 5.5 lb/hp | $275,650 |
| 2026 AMG GT Pro 4Matic | 4299 lb | 603 hp | 7.1 lb/hp | $202,200 | | 2026 Aston Martin Vantage S | 3847 lb | 671 hp | 5.7 lb/hp | $235,000 | Considering this competitive set, it’s highly probable that the Toyota GR GT will be priced well over $200,000. The engineers are building a premium, high-performance machine, and that comes at a premium price point. Fiendish Electromechanical Complexity: A Technological Statement Underneath the hood of the GR GT lies a powertrain that’s nothing short of fiendishly complex—a testament to Toyota’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of engineering. This mechanical marvel includes a mechanical limited-slip differential (LSD), ensuring maximum traction and control for both track performance and tire-smoking shenanigans. The engineers confirmed that the GR GT will offer a variety of driving modes, but details remain sparse. A peek at the steering wheel provides some clues, featuring a knob on the right labeled ‘Sport Boost.’ The left side features a ‘TRC/VSC Off’ button, and Doi-san eventually confirmed that drivers will be allowed to completely disable traction and stability control, offering purists the unadulterated driving experience they crave. When asked about future high-performance models—such as a Nürburgring Edition, GRMN, or GT3 RS version—Doi-san remained coy. “Obviously we can’t talk about future product, but variations and improvements is something we’re always looking for. And that’s crucial, very important for a sports car,” he stated, leaving the door wide open for future developments. The Nürburgring Challenge: Humiliation to Redemption Central to the GR GT’s development is the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife. When Akio Toyoda, Chairman of Toyota and founder of Gazoo Racing, unveiled the GR GT and GR GT3, he did so in front of a massive screen displaying the word ‘humiliation.’ Akio spoke at length about his experiences developing Toyota sports cars at the Nürburgring just a few years ago, including a fourth-generation Supra, where he was passed by faster, better-handling cars, mostly from Germany. This concept of “using humiliation as a force for improvement” is what drove the development of the GR GT and GT3. When asked if the team is targeting a specific lap time, such as under 7 minutes, as recently achieved by the Mustang GTD, Corvette ZR1, and Corvette ZR1X, Doi-san declined to comment directly. However, he affirmed the critical importance of the Nürburgring to Toyota, the GR brand, and the company’s motorsports programs. Reassuringly, he reiterated Akio’s position: the GR GT will not be the one getting passed on the Green Hell. Given the modesty and precision of Japanese engineers, this declaration is essentially a promise that the GR GT will achieve a sub-7-minute lap time. Several Porsche 911 GT3 and AMG GT models have already dipped below this barrier, and the GR GT is designed to join their ranks. The Lexus LFA: The Electric Future Flagship
If you were hoping for a quick return of the Lexus LFA, you may need to prepare for a wait. Toyota representatives, including Doi-san, consistently stated that the LFA would arrive in “several years.” Pricing and Market Positioning for the Electric LFA The pricing of the next-generation LFA remains uncertain. Doi-san conceded that the world has changed since the original V-10 supercar debuted in 2010 at $375,000 and exited the market at $445,000 for the Nürburgring Edition. With the upcoming LFA expected to be all-electric, it complicates the pricing strategy. However, Toyota acknowledges that the market has evolved. With fewer luxury sports coupes on the market and no electric sports coupes currently priced above $200,000, Lexus faces a unique challenge. While vehicles like the Lucid Air Sapphire, Rolls-Royce Spectre, and Cadillac Celestiq exceed the $200,000 mark, they don’t fit the competitive profile of the LFA. Electric hypercars like the Rimac Nevera and Lotus Evija are in the $2.3 to $2.4 million range, which is decidedly not Lexus territory. One competitor that comes close is the second-generation Tesla Roadster, rumored to be in the $200,000 to $250,000 range, though its future remains vaporware. For Lexus, the challenge is to position the LFA as a world-class electric flagship that justifies its premium price without alienating its core customer base. Solid-State Batteries: The Technological Game-Changer? One factor that could elevate the LFA to a much higher price point is the potential inclusion of solid-state battery (SSB) technology. While no one at the event would confirm this under direct questioning, it is a highly probable scenario. Toyota has been investing heavily in solid-state batteries since 2020 through its joint venture with Panasonic, Prime Planet Energy & Solutions, Inc. In 2024, Toyota announced plans to release SSB technology around 2027 to 2028, promising a range of 621 miles (1000 km) and charging times of approximately 10 minutes. This level of performance would represent a significant technological leap, aligning perfectly with Lexus’ ambition for a flagship sports car. The Packaging Challenge: Designing Around Solid-State Power The implementation of solid-state batteries presents a major packaging challenge for the LFA production engineers. The current global EV standard is to place heavy battery cells in a skateboard chassis located low in the floor of the vehicle, usually occupying all the space between the wheels. However, the all-aluminum spaceframe chassis shared by the GR GT, GR GT3, and LFA Concept doesn’t feature a traditional floorpan ahead of the front firewall; it uses thick structural members instead. The little floor that exists spans the compact two-passenger cabin and ends at the rear bulkhead ahead of the transaxle.
Could traditional lithium-ion cells be sandwiched ahead of the firewall and under the cabin floor? Or could the batteries occupy the space in the engine bay, transmission tunnel, and cargo area once the GR GT’s hybrid V-8 powertrain is removed? The use of “T-shaped” battery packs has become popular with aftermarket EV swappers, making anything possible, including the use of smaller, lighter
