When Brave Citizens Help Save Cops Toyota’s Electric Dreams: The Next Generation of Performance Vehicles Toyota recently took the wraps off a trio of high-performance sports carsβ€”the Lexus LFA Concept, GR GT, and GR GT3 race car. This unveiling has ignited widespread speculation about the future of Toyota’s sports car lineup and the company’s commitment to automotive innovation. With chief program manager Takashi Doi and engineering teams at the helm, the development of these vehicles is proceeding at a deliberate pace. The company intends to maximize the journey from debut to customer delivery, ensuring every milestone is properly executed. The GR GT: A New Contender on the Grid The GR GT is slated to hit the market in 2027, likely as a 2028 model. This production road car will serve as the homologated version of the GR GT3 race car. While the race car is expected to debut shortly after, history suggests that the road-going version may follow some time later, similar to the staggered release of the Ford GT. Pricing and Availability Determining the exact pricing of the GR GT has been a challenge. Project manager Doi has suggested referencing the prices of comparable models from Porsche and Mercedes-AMG to estimate the GR GT’s market positioning. With a claimed output of 641 horsepower and a curb weight of 3,858 pounds, the GR GT boasts a power-to-weight ratio of 6.0 pounds per horsepower. This places it in the company of high-performance GTs that typically exceed the $200,000 mark. Here is a comparison of key performance indicators for similar high-end GT cars: | Vehicle | Curb Weight | Horsepower | Weight/Power Ratio | Starting Price | | :— | :—: | :—: | :—: | :—: | | 2028 Toyota GR GT | 3,858 lb | 641 hp | 6.0 lb/hp | N/A | | 2026 Porsche 911 GT3 | 3,278 lb | 502 hp | 6.2 lb/hp | $235,500 | | 2026 Porsche 911 Turbo S | 3,859 lb | 701 hp | 5.5 lb/hp | $275,650 | | 2026 AMG GT Pro 4Matic | 4,299 lb | 603 hp | 7.1 lb/hp | $202,200 | | 2026 Aston Martin Vantage S | 3,847 lb | 671 hp | 5.7 lb/hp | $235,000 | Based on this competitive landscape, it is highly probable that the GR GT will be priced well above $200,000.
Performance Modes and Future Variants The GR GT features a sophisticated hybrid powertrain that includes a mechanical limited-slip differential (LSD). This configuration is designed to deliver engaging driving dynamics, enabling impressive burnouts, smoky drifts, and tire-scorching maneuvers. When asked about the potential for a drift mode, Doi-san confirmed that his team is developing various driving modes but did not disclose their names. Evidence of these modes can be found on the steering wheel. A knob on the right side is labeled ‘Sport Boost,’ while a button on the lower left, marked ‘TRC/VSC Off,’ allows the driver to disengage traction and stability control. When questioned about the possibility of a future NΓΌrburgring Edition (similar to the Lexus LFA’s production run), GRMN, GT R, or GT3 RS variant, Doi remained diplomatic. He stated that while they cannot discuss future products, they are always exploring variations and improvements, emphasizing the importance of such development for a sports car. The NΓΌrburgring Legacy: From Humiliation to Redemption The NΓΌrburgring Nordschleife played a pivotal role in the development of the GR GT and GR GT3. Akio Toyoda, also known as ‘Master Driver Morizo,’ highlighted what he referred to as a period of ‘humiliation’ for Toyota’s sports cars at the ‘Green Hell.’ He recounted experiences where Toyota prototypes struggled to keep pace with faster, better-handling competitors, primarily from Germany. This experience fueled a commitment to improvement, a core tenet of Japanese automotive philosophy. While Doi-san avoided confirming a specific lap time target, he affirmed the NΓΌrburgring’s importance to the GR brand and Toyota’s motorsports initiatives. He reiterated Akio’s determination to ensure the GR GT does not get left behind on the NΓΌrburgring. Given the modesty and engineering rigor typical of Japanese manufacturers, the implicit promise of a sub-7-minute lap time is palpable. This benchmark has been achieved by other high-performance vehicles, such as the Mustang GTD (6:52), Corvette ZR1 (6:50), and Corvette ZR1X (6:49). The GR GT’s engineering foundation strongly suggests it will join this elite club of sub-7-minute lap performers. The Lexus LFA: A Vision of the Future For fans of the Lexus LFA, the news is bittersweet. The production version of the LFA concept is still several years away, and pricing remains uncertain. Lexus representatives, including Doi-san, have indicated a timeframe of ‘several years’ for the LFA’s return. Anticipated Pricing The original LFA debuted in 2010 at $375,000 and was later discontinued after the LFA NΓΌrburgring Edition commanded a price of $445,000. Doi-san acknowledges that the automotive landscape has shifted since the V10 supercar’s departure. The transition to an electric platform complicates matters, suggesting the new LFA will need to be priced below $350,000. However, the market for luxury sports coupes is extremely niche, and there are currently no electric sports coupes in the $200,000+ range. While there are a few high-end electric vehicles such as the Lucid Air Sapphire, Rolls-Royce Spectre, and Cadillac Celestiq, none fit the LFA’s competitive profile. The Rimac Nevera and Lotus Evija, which operate in the electric hypercar space, cost $2.3 to $2.4 millionβ€”a figure far outside Lexus’s target market.
The second-generation Tesla Roadster is perhaps the closest competitor, with rumored pricing in the $200,000 to $250,000 range. However, the realization of this vehicle remains uncertain. The Solid-State Battery Factor A critical factor that could influence the LFA’s pricing is the potential use of solid-state battery technology. While Lexus representatives have declined to confirm this under direct questioning, Toyota has been actively developing solid-state batteries since 2020, through its joint venture with Panasonic, Prime Planet Energy & Solutions, Inc. In 2024, Toyota provided an update on its battery roadmap, indicating that solid-state batteries are expected to be available in 2027 to 2028. These batteries promise a range of 621 miles (1000 km) and charging times of approximately 10 minutes. This substantial leap in battery performance could be the technological differentiator Lexus needs to justify its flagship positioning. Furthermore, it could solve a significant packaging challenge. The current industry standard for electric vehicle design is a skateboard chassis, where the heavy battery pack is positioned as low as possible in the floor between the wheels. However, the shared all-aluminum spaceframe chassis of the LFA, GR GT, and GR GT3 does not have a traditional floorpan ahead of the firewall, instead featuring thick structural members. Solving the Packaging Puzzle Could traditional lithium-ion cells be accommodated in the space ahead of the firewall or under the cabin floor? Or would the batteries utilize the engine bay, transmission tunnel, and cargo area once the GR GT’s V-8 hybrid powertrain is removed? The use of ‘T-shaped’ battery packs by aftermarket EV converters suggests any configuration is possible, especially with smaller, lighter, and more energy-dense solid-state batteries. While this is currently conjecture, the integration of revolutionary solid-state batteries into the Lexus flagship makes sense from packaging, performance, and marketing perspectives. It could also explain why the production debut of the LFA is still some time away. Engineering Excellence: The Complexity Behind the Speed A close examination of the GR GT’s powertrain cutaway reveals a design of fiendish complexity, representing a bold engineering statement for Toyota. Starting with an all-aluminum engine and forged internals, the twin-turbochargers in the engine’s valley generate a claimed 641 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. This power is delivered via a driveshaft encased in a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) ‘torque tube’ to a bell housing at the rear. This housing contains the hybrid system’s electric motor and an eight-speed transmission. The precisely crafted gearsets in the cutaway model appear almost watch-like, especially at the rear transmission where a conical set of gears sends the hybrid power forward to a mechanical LSD, distributing it to the rear wheels via half shafts.
The powertrain engineers claim this complicated U-turn reduces overall powertrain length. However, it is also seen as a powerful statement by Akio Toyoda. In recent years, the automotive world has witnessed the rise of simplified electric powert
