Cold Pizza Sends Woman Into Full-Blown Rage at Domino’s Toyota’s Sports Car Offensive: Deciphering the GR GT, GT3, and Lexus LFA Future The automotive world is buzzing as Toyota lifts the curtain on what many are calling its new \”Holy Trinity.\” We’ve spent a few precious hours with the Lexus LFA Concept, the GR GT, and the GR GT3 race car, attending deep-dive technical briefings with project leads like Takashi Doi. We’ve asked the tough questions about what makes these vehicles tick, what they won’t tell us, and most importantly, what they signal for Toyota’s future direction. The biggest takeaway: Toyota isn’t just announcing cars; they’re engineering an evolution, ensuring that the skills of car-making are not lost in the transition to new technologies. This new lineup serves as a testament to Toyota’s Chairman and \”Master Driver\” Morizo’s philosophy: Shikinen Sengu. This isn’t just car-making; it’s a sacred renewal, passing down traditional skills while integrating cutting-edge innovation. By launching a bold new GR sports car brand and commissioning three distinct high-performance vehicles, Toyota is investing in its next generation of engineers, project managers, and executives. This is their way of sharpening skills at the highest levels of product development and motorsport. The GR GT: Performance, Pricing, and the Nürburgring Pricing and Availability: A Bold New Challenger The GR GT is the production-ready road car that Toyota aims to deliver by 2027, positioning it as a 2028 model. It will serve as the homologation version of the GR GT3 race car. This timing suggests a possible overlap where the race car hits the track well before its road-legal sibling hits dealerships—a strategy we’ve seen before, such as with the Ford GT. When pressed about pricing, Doi-san pointed us toward the specifications of its closest competitors: the Porsche 911 and the Mercedes-AMG GT. Using the GR GT’s impressive figures of 641 horsepower and a 3858-pound curb weight, we can calculate a power-to-weight ratio of 6.0 lb/hp. Here’s how it stacks up against some high-performance GTs: | Vehicle | Curb Weight | Horsepower | Weight/Power | Base Price | | :——————- | :———- | :——— | :———– | :———— | | 2028 Toyota GR GT | 3858 lb | 641 hp | 6.0 lb/hp | N/A | | 2026 Porsche 911 GT3 | 3278 lb | 502 hp | 6.2 lb/hp | $235,500 | | 2026 Porsche 911 Turbo S | 3859 lb | 701 hp | 5.5 lb/hp | $275,650 |
| 2026 AMG GT Pro 4Matic | 4299 lb | 603 hp | 7.1 lb/hp | $202,200 | | 2026 Aston Martin Vantage S | 3847 lb | 671 hp | 5.7 lb/hp | $235,000 | Based on this competition, it’s clear the GR GT will be priced above $200,000, firmly planting it in the rarefied air of the high-performance grand tourer market. Performance Dynamics and Driver Engagement The GR GT features a fiendishly complex hybrid powertrain, specifically engineered to deliver a high degree of driver engagement. This system includes a mechanical limited-slip differential (LSD), which is the secret sauce for achieving tire-scorching Shenanigans—think fat, smoky burnouts, dizzying donuts, and exhilarating, sustained drifts. To the burning question: Will it drift? Will there be a dedicated drift mode? Doi-san confirmed that different driving modes are in development, though he was tight-lipped about their specific names. However, a closer look at the GR GT’s steering wheel provides some strong clues. A dial on the right is labeled ‘Sport Boost,’ suggesting a mode that enhances aggressive performance and throttle response. Mirroring this on the left is a button for traction and stability control (TRC/VSC), marked \”Off.\” When asked directly, Doi-san eventually confirmed that drivers will indeed be allowed to turn traction and stability completely off, offering true control and track-ready tuning. Looking ahead, the question of future higher-performance models remains on everyone’s mind. Could we see a Nürburgring Edition, similar to the special series that ended the original Lexus LFA’s run? Perhaps a GRMN (Meister of Nürburgring), GT R, or GT3 RS version? Doi-san politely deflected, stating, \”Obviously we can’t talk about future product, but variations and improvements is something we’re always looking for. And that’s crucial, very important for a sports car.\” The Nürburgring Nordschleife: Humiliation to Redemption The Nürburgring Nordschleife remains a central theme for Toyota’s new sports car program. When Chairman Akio Toyoda introduced the GR GT and GR GT3 in Woven City, he stood before a massive screen displaying the word ‘humiliation’ in bold capital letters. Akio spoke at length about Toyota’s recent history at the ‘Ring, referencing instances—particularly with the Supra—where the team found itself being consistently passed by faster, better-handling rivals, mostly from Germany. It is this profound Japanese concept of using humiliation as fuel for improvement that has driven the development of the GR GT and GT3. When we asked Doi-san about the significance of the ‘Ring and if the team is targeting specific lap times, like the sub-7-minute benchmarks recently set by the Mustang GTD (6:52), Corvette ZR1 (6:50), and Corvette ZR1X (6:49), he declined to comment directly.
However, he did affirm the paramount importance of the ‘Ring to Toyota, the GR brand, and the company’s motorsport endeavors. He reiterated Akio’s position: the GR GT will not be the one getting left behind on the Green Hell. Given the characteristic modesty of Japanese automotive engineers, this is essentially a declaration that the GR GT will achieve a sub-7-minute lap—especially since various 911 GT3 and AMG GT models have already smashed through this barrier. For Toyota, the Nürburgring isn’t just a racetrack; it’s the proving ground where the GR brand will cement its status against the world’s elite. The Lexus LFA: A Glimpse of a High-Tech Future Pricing and Availability: Waiting for the Electric Flagship For those captivated by the return of the LFA and eager to know when it will arrive and how much it will cost, the news is that you’ll be waiting several years. This was the consistent answer from Toyota representatives we spoke with, including Doi-san. As for the price, the consensus is that the new LFA will need to be considerably less than the original. The 2010 launch price was a shocking $375,000, and the LFA Nürburgring Edition ended its run at $445,000. Doi-san conceded that the automotive landscape has changed drastically since the original V-10 supercar departed the market. The shift to an electric vehicle (EV) framework complicates things significantly. This appears to be a subtle admission that the next-generation LFA needs to land below the $350,000 mark. We believe it must be substantially less for a few critical reasons. The luxury sports coupe market is already minuscule, and there are currently no electric sports coupes priced above $200,000. While there are a few electric luxury and performance cars pushing over $200,000—such as the Lucid Air Sapphire, Rolls-Royce Spectre, and Cadillac Celestiq—none fit the competitive profile of the LFA. Stepping into the realm of electric hypercars like the Rimac Nevera and Lotus Evija pushes prices into the $2.3 to $2.4 million range, which is decidedly not Lexus territory. The closest comparison is the rumored second-gen Tesla Roadster, potentially falling into the $200,000 to $250,000 range—though whether that concept ever becomes a production reality remains to be seen. The Solid-State Battery Solution There is one potentially game-changing factor that could justify a high price for the LFA as a Lexus flagship: the potential use of solid-state battery (SSB) technology. This is a rumor that no one at the event would confirm under direct questioning.
What we do know is that Toyota has been heavily invested in solid-state batteries since 2020, following the establishment of a joint venture with Panasonic named Prime Planet Energy & Solutions, Inc. In 2024, Toyota released an update on its battery road map
