What Happens When You Steal From Your Job Toyota’s Unveiling of the New Sports Car Holy Trinity: What It All Means Just a few months ago, Toyota dropped a bombshell on the automotive world, revealing what’s being called the “Holy Trinity” of Japanese sports cars. This isn’t just a lineup of new vehicles; it’s a bold statement about preserving traditional craftsmanship while simultaneously pushing the boundaries of modern engineering. The lineup includes a sleek, road-going Lexus LFA Concept, a track-ready GR GT3 race car, and the road-legal GR GT. We were fortunate enough to get a close-up look at these machines and sit down with the Chief Program Manager, Takashi Doi, and his engineering teams, who covered everything from chassis to aerodynamics. While we didn’t get all the answers—some discussions were naturally veiled in corporate discretion—we walked away with a crystal-clear understanding that Toyota is embracing a long-term vision. They plan to take every step of this journey, from debut to keys in customer hands, with meticulous precision. GR GT: The Future of the Grand Tourer Pricing, Availability, and Performance Benchmarks The GR GT is Toyota’s promised answer to the modern grand tourer, slated for a 2027 introduction, likely rolling out as a 2028 model. It will serve as the production-spec homologation for the GR GT3 race car, which might make its racing debut shortly thereafter. History tells us, however, that some race cars hit the track long before their road-going siblings are ready—just look at the timeline of the Ford GT. When pressed about the GR GT’s pricing, Mr. Doi subtly pointed us toward the competitive set. Using the claimed 641 horsepower and a curb weight of 3,858 lbs, we calculate a power-to-weight ratio of 6.0 lbs/hp. Comparing this to other high-performance GTs reveals a clear picture: | Vehicle | Curb Weight | Horsepower | Weight/Power | Base Price | | ————————— | ———– | ———- | ———— | ————— | | 2028 Toyota GR GT | 3,858 lbs | 641 hp | 6.0 lbs/hp | N/A | | 2026 Porsche 911 GT3 | 3,278 lbs | 502 hp | 6.2 lbs/hp | $235,500 | | 2026 Porsche 911 Turbo S\ | 3,859 lbs | 701 hp | 5.5 lbs/hp | $275,650 | | 2026 AMG GT Pro 4Matic\ | 4,299 lbs | 603 hp | 7.1 lbs/hp | $202,200 | | 2026 Aston Martin Vantage S | 3,847 lbs | 671 hp | 5.7 lbs/hp | $235,000 |
Note: The Porsche 911 Turbo S and AMG GT Pro models are AWD, featuring torque vectoring for enhanced grip and handling. Given this competitive landscape, it’s highly probable that the GR GT will command a price of over $200,000. Performance Modes and Future Models The GR GT features a remarkably complex hybrid powertrain with a mechanical limited-slip differential (LSD). This setup promises not just engaging driving dynamics but also all the tire-smoking fun any enthusiast could desire. Think of those thick black burnouts, the satisfying smoky donuts, and the long, controlled drifts. So, the question is inevitable: will it drift? Will there be a dedicated drift mode? Mr. Doi confirmed that the team is actively developing various driving modes but remained tight-lipped about their exact designations. However, a glance at the GR GT’s steering wheel provides some compelling hints. On the right, a rotary dial labeled ‘Sport Boost’ likely controls the hybrid system’s output, offering a surge of extra horsepower when needed. On the lower-left side, a TRC/VSC (Traction/Stability Control) button allows drivers to completely disable the safety systems. When asked directly, Mr. Doi confirmed that drivers will have the option to turn off traction control completely. Looking further down the road, we inquired about potential higher-performance variants of the GR GT, such as a Nürburgring Edition, GRMN (a nod to the German term for “Master of Nürburgring”), GT R, or GT3 RS version. While Mr. Doi couldn’t discuss future products, he emphasized that variations and performance enhancements are always under consideration. “It’s something we’re always looking for,” he noted, “And that’s crucial, very important for a sports car.” The Nürburgring: From Humiliation to Redemption The Legend of Master Driver Morizo The Nürburgring Nordschleife plays a pivotal role in the story of these new sports cars. When Akio Toyoda—affectionately known as “Master Driver Morizo”—introduced the GR GT and GR GT3 in Toyota’s Woven City, he stood before a massive screen flashing the word ‘HUMILIATION’. He spoke at length about the humbling experience of developing Toyota’s sports cars at the ’Ring just a few years ago, often finding themselves being passed by faster, more agile machinery, primarily from German manufacturers. It was this very Japanese concept of using humiliation as fuel for improvement that drove the development of the GR GT and GT3. When we asked Mr. Doi about the significance of the Nürburgring and whether the team is targeting a specific lap time, such as the sub-7-minute mark recently achieved by the Mustang GTD (6:52), Corvette ZR1 (6:50), and Corvette ZR1X (6:49), he avoided giving a direct answer. However, he did affirm the paramount importance of the Nürburgring to Toyota, the GR brand, and the company’s motorsports programs. He reiterated Akio’s sentiment that the GR GT will not be the car getting passed on the Green Hell. Given the characteristic modesty of Japanese engineers, we interpret this as a clear declaration that the GR GT will achieve a sub-7-minute lap time. After all, competitors like the Porsche 911 GT3 and AMG GT models have already shattered this benchmark, and Toyota is determined to join the elite club. Lexus LFA: The Electrified Return of a Legend
Pricing and Availability Hurdles For enthusiasts captivated by the iconic design of the LFA, the wait is proving to be extended. When asked about its arrival and pricing, Toyota representatives, including Mr. Doi, repeated the refrain: “several years.” As for the price, we anticipate the new LFA will need to be considerably more affordable than its predecessor. The original LFA debuted in 2010 at a staggering $375,000 and was discontinued a couple of years later at $445,000 for the LFA Nürburgring Edition. Mr. Doi acknowledged that the world has changed significantly since Lexus’ limited-edition V-10 supercar departed. The shift to an electric platform introduces new complexities. This appears to be a subtle implication that the next-generation LFA will need to come in under $350,000. We believe it needs to be substantially less than that, for a few key reasons. The luxury sports coupe market is already niche, and there are virtually no electric sports coupes currently priced above $200,000. While the luxury EV space includes high-end models like the Lucid Air Sapphire, Rolls-Royce Spectre, and Cadillac Celestiq, none align with the LFA’s competitive profile. If we look at the electric hypercar realm, models like the Rimac Nevera and Lotus Evija command prices ranging from $2.3 to $2.4 million—decidedly not Lexus territory. The closest comparison might be the second-generation Tesla Roadster, rumored to be priced in the $200,000 to $250,000 range—if Elon Musk’s vaporware ever materializes. The Solid-State Battery Solution There is one crucial factor that could elevate the LFA into a highly exotic luxury sports flagship: solid-state battery (SSB) technology. While no one at the event would confirm this under direct questioning, it remains a persistent rumor. What we do know is that Toyota has been aggressively pursuing solid-state batteries since 2020, following the establishment of a joint venture with Panasonic named Prime Planet Energy & Solutions, Inc. In 2024, Toyota released an update on its battery roadmap, projecting SSB availability between 2027 and 2028, offering a range of 621 miles (1,000 km) and charging times of approximately 10 minutes. This level of battery performance would represent a monumental technological leap—precisely what Lexus may be seeking for its flagship sports car. It also presents a potential solution to a significant packaging problem in the electric LFA. Overcoming the Packaging Challenge
The current industry standard for electric vehicle manufacturing involves positioning heavy battery cells, bundled into packs,
